Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria. It is by far the largest city in Austria, as well as its cultural, economic, and political centre. As the former home of the Habsburg court and its various empires, the city still has the trappings of the imperial capital it once was, and the historic city centre is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Contemporary Vienna is a vibrant city with a population of about 1.6 million. Vienna is a city of music, but it is also synonymous with gourmet fare, cream cakes, superb coffee, the angelic strains of the Vienna Boys' Choir and the proud prancing of the Lippizaner stallions at the world-famous Spanish Riding School. Vienna today is a beguiling mix of old and new, perhaps best illustrated by the new Museums Quartier cultural district. Here the courtyard of the old Spanish riding stables, featuring the city's largest baroque facade, is now home to contemporary museum architecture.
A visit to Vienna is like a stroll through the past, for almost nowhere else is history so close at hand. In the innumerable coffee-houses, often fitted with antique furniture, newspapers are provided free to the customers, a mixture of romantics and managerial types clutching an art-tourist guidebook or holding a mobile phone to their ear, typify the real ‘Viennese hodge-podge’.
There are three major departments in the city of Vienna that provide the most employment and also generate the most revenues. They are business, industry and government and public services. Even the many theatres in the city, which Vienna is famous for, are operated by the government. The main money spinning industries in the city are tourism, metal products, chemicals, machinery, electrical equipment, printed materials, textiles, garments and paper.
Vienna has a temperate continental climate, with warm, sunny summers and cold winters. The average temperature range in January is between 23F and 34F (-4C to 1C), while in July temperatures range between 60F and 76F (15C and 25C).
