Kozhikode was the capital of Malabar during the time of Zamorins who where ruling before the British Rule in India. It was trading in spices like black pepper and cardamom with the outside world with the Jews, Arabs, Phoenicians, Chinese from centuries and with the Dutch and Portuguese more than 500 years ago. Portuguese were the first foreigners to find this land, the gateway to Kerala, famous for spices. This city is famous for receiving Vasco da Gama in 1498. He landed on the remote beach of Kappad which is 18 km away from the Calicut City. The English word calico, a cotton textile, originated from this city's name "Calicut".

Kozhikode (Calicut), the most important region of Malabar in yesteryears, was the capital of the powerful Zamorins and also a prominent trade and commerce center. The third largest city in Kerala, Kozhikode holds one of the richest past and one of the most colorful present in this part of the country. Kozhikode served as the capital of Malabar during the reigns of Zamorins, who ruled the region before the coming of the British. Kozhikode is situated about 410 km north of state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Kozhikode offers varied experience to a traveller. It has lovely beaches, ancient monuments, temples and cascading waterfalls. It is also a wonderful place to shop for authentic Indian spices. Other popular places of tourist interest in Kozhikode include Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, Sweet Meat Street and the famous Mananchira Square, which sports beautiful gardens and a musical fountain. One can also visit galleries that showcase Raja Ravi Verma's paintings. There is also Lion's Park, which is quite popular among children and families.

Kozhikode city is the marketing centre for commodities like pepper coconut, coffee, rubber, lemon grass oil etc., produced in Kozhikode and the neighbouring districts of Wayanad, Malappuram and Kannur. Basking in the idyllic setting of the serene Arabian Sea on the west and the proud peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east. The serene beaches, lush green countryside,and the historic sites, all combine to make Kozhikode a popular tourist destination filled with a warm ambience to fascinate a visitor.

Kozhikode lies in the state of Kerala. The weather is overall pleasant in these parts of Kerala although humidity might be something that bothers. Summers in Kozhikode are pleasant with temperature rising up to 33 'C plus. The winters are also pleasant with average temperature being around 23 'C. The best time to visit Kozhikode is around the year. Although to enjoy a good climate the best time would be anywhere between the months of September to March.
